The Woolnoth Society

Charitable Trust

Welcome
Welcome from the Woolnoth Society Chairman, Skip McMullan
Over the past year, with the retirement, resignations and death of a number of senior council members, the charity has had a chance to consider again what its purpose is and should be, given the continuing challenges of being a small charity in a world where the demands made of small charities which seek to support other charities is becoming ever more arduous. I very much hope that the following web pages give you fuller details of all aspects of the charity and that readers are attracted to the charity, its work, its events and most important of all, the organisations and charities that benefit from the funds raised by the charity.
The Woolnoth Society Charitable Trust has decided that in accordance with its original mandate and recognising that the traditional view of the City of London has expanded to include Canary Wharf, it needs to broaden its membership to all those connected with the financial service industry, both in the 'old' City as well as the 'new' City to the east. Therefore both in 2005 and again in 2006, the charity will conduct a number of membership drives as part of its social programme, with a view to increasing the number of corporate and sponsor members. This should also coincidentally increase the number of supporters there will be for any fund raising event.
Recognising that all the administration of the charity is voluntary, the charity must make ever greater use of the internet, to attract new members, to inform existing members of social events and to report on the success of those events. At the same time, there is a greater and greater use of the internet by those charities and organisations seeking funds and therefore our web site needs to be as up to date as possible such that we receive requests from charities for which we are probably an ideal donor. To this end, the charity is likely to have to use external resources efficiently to create and keep up to date this web site.
There is no reason why having created a tighter operating control around our activities that the charity should not be more ambitious each year with its fund raising targets - in the near to medium term the target is to raise consistently in excess of £75,000 per annum, which is up from around £45,000 in recent years. The use of Gift Aid will be an important part of achieving that target and will be reflected in the way that fund raising events are set up and run.
Membership subscriptions are an important part of the fund raising target and also an important statement by the membership of their contribution to the work and objectives of the charity. Therefore, Council have determined that all levels of membership subscriptions should increase from 2007. Again the use of Gift Aid will be an important element of increasing funding from this source.
The work of the Appeals Committee will continue very much as it has done in recent years - it is a model for other charities to follow with every request being followed up to ensure that our objectives are met whilst ensuring that as many requests as possible can be met. This requires an enormous contribution of voluntary hours but in return there are many people and organisations that are the better for having turned to this charity. Typical donations rarely exceed £3,000 with many falling much lower than that.
The number of fund raising events will be restricted in the sense that it is the desire to have a few well organised and well attended events and from which the net funds for the event can be maximised. To this end, one of the sponsor or corporate members will take responsibility for the event from arranging the hosting, sending out the flyers, selling the event and collecting in the ticket fees and reporting on the event on the web pages.
As Chairman I am delighted to use this page to recognise the enormous contribution made by the members and their organisations towards the continued good health of the charity and look forward to the charity continuing to make a significant contribution to the life and well being of so many in need as well as at the same time providing an opportunity for its members to enjoy excellent networking opportunities.
